I found an extension called GMnetPUNCH or something like that, so assuming that works it seems UDP holepunching might actually be doable, but then I would have to use UDP where packets get lost which presumably makes the game unplayable so that seems bad too.For developers just starting in the industry, the task of choosing the best game engine can be daunting. So now we get to the part that every "networking" post on r/gamemaker ever lands in: UDP holepunching. Now, it happens that my game is turn based, so based on that I should be using TCP, but then we get to port forwarding because otherwise the clients cant connect, and obviously no one would play a game where you need to port forward so TCP is bad. So TCP is fine for slow games, like turn based games, but UDP is needed for CoD basically where shit happens all the time. On the other hand UDP is "fast" because it doesn't spend time re-sending lost packets but unreliable because, well, lost packets. It seems to me people are saying TCP is reliable but "slow" because if a packet gets lost, which they will when sending over the internet, TCP sends the packet again and again until it is successful. I am developing a game that needs online multiplayer to be worthwhile so I've been reading about TCP and UDP and I'm getting a little annoyed because it seems both are useless.
